Thailand's police apparatus moved swiftly to identify and question the person responsible for operating the vehicle. Pol Maj Surachat Thongyai, the investigating officer based at Patong Police Station, confirmed that authorities had brought in Kitphong, a 34-year-old native of Phatthalung province, for interrogation on Monday, June 15. Evidence gathered during the investigation conclusively established that Kitphong was indeed operating the tuk-tuk at the moment of the fatal incident. The journey took a dramatic turn when the passengers disclosed upon arrival that they possessed insufficient cash to settle the fare, requesting instead that he drive them to an automated teller machine so they could withdraw funds. The intoxicated male passenger proved unable to withdraw cash from three separate ATMs that Kitphong visited in the vicinity.
