This finding, drawn from IDEMIA Group's IDEMIA Secure Transactions study released in Kuala Lumpur on July 21, paints a portrait of a society thoroughly immersed in digital-first practices, from financial transactions to government services and social interaction. The adoption figure is remarkable not merely for its magnitude, but for what it reveals about how comprehensively Malaysian consumers have embraced technology as a core component of their daily lives.

Yet beneath this surface of widespread adoption lies a more troubling undercurrent. The same survey found that 53 per cent of Malaysian respondents feel considerably more vulnerable when conducting transactions online compared to their experience five years ago. This perception of heightened risk reflects a real shift in the threat environment—one that has only accelerated in the intervening years. The erosion of confidence, despite sustained reliance on digital platforms, points to a fundamental tension in modern life: citizens feel compelled to participate in an increasingly digital economy while simultaneously harbouring legitimate doubts about whether their personal information remains adequately protected.

Among respondents, 87 per cent expressed alarm about the potential for fraud perpetrated through digital tools and channels. The figure rises even higher when considering data privacy: 91 per cent worry about the theft or misuse of their personal information when engaging with digital services. These proportions are striking precisely because they demonstrate near-universal acknowledgment of digital risks. The survey reveals not a small subset of anxious users, but rather a population-wide recognition that cyber threats represent a material concern to everyday online activity.

IDEMIA Group, which specializes in biometrics, cryptography, and digital security infrastructure, identified a crucial paradox within these findings. Despite recognizing these dangers, Malaysian consumers are not retreating from digital services. Instead, they continue to depend upon and actively use online platforms for banking, shopping, government transactions, and communication. This persistence in the face of acknowledged risk suggests that convenience and necessity often override security considerations in user decision-making. Consumers appear to have tacitly accepted a degree of vulnerability as the price of participating in digital commerce and services.

Approximately half of survey respondents acknowledged that while they are aware cyber risks exist, they lack comprehensive understanding of how these threats actually operate or what specific exposures they face when interacting with digital services. This knowledge deficit is significant: it means that public concern about cybersecurity, while widespread, is often diffuse and unmoored from concrete comprehension of technical vulnerabilities. Users feel unsafe without necessarily understanding why, a psychological state that undermines confidence and can lead to either paralysis or reckless disregard for precautions.

The nature of emerging threats has evolved markedly. IDEMIA's research identifies artificial intelligence-driven cyberattacks as a primary driver of escalating security concerns among Malaysian respondents. Unlike traditional malware or phishing schemes that target individual vulnerabilities, AI-powered attacks operate with greater sophistication and adaptability, learning from defensive measures and adjusting tactics in real time. This technological advancement represents a qualitative shift in the threat landscape, one that outpaces the average user's capacity to understand or anticipate. The deployment of machine learning in both attacks and defences has created an asymmetry that favours well-resourced threat actors over ordinary individuals.

Beyond artificial intelligence, the survey touches upon an emerging technological concern that will likely dominate security discussions throughout the coming decade: quantum computing. While only a minority of Malaysian respondents report clear familiarity with quantum computing technology, a striking 83 per cent of those who are aware of it already perceive it as a potential cybersecurity threat. This perception, though not yet universal, reflects an intuitive understanding that fundamentally different computational capabilities could render current encryption methods obsolete. The implications are profound: data encrypted today with current standards could theoretically be decrypted by future quantum systems, a prospect that has prompted governments and enterprises worldwide to explore quantum-resistant cryptography.

These findings carry particular significance for Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region more broadly. As developing economies accelerate their digital transitions—bringing unbanked populations into financial services, migrating government systems online, and expanding e-commerce infrastructure—the security foundation upon which these systems rest must be robust and trustworthy. The IDEMIA study suggests that Malaysian consumers, despite their high digital service usage, harbour insufficient confidence in current security measures. This gap between adoption and confidence could constrain the pace of further digital transformation if not addressed through policy intervention, technology investment, and public education.

Building digital infrastructure that users can trust requires not only implementing cutting-edge security measures but also communicating those measures clearly to the public.
