The settlement of the Bukit Kiara Longhouse residents' housing situation underscores the administration's dedication to tackling people's grievances promptly rather than allowing them to persist across generations, said Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. The initiative will provide eligible families with two new housing units at no cost, directly addressing the needs of the urban poor population in the capital.
Ramanan, who represents Sungai Buloh as Member of Parliament, characterised the Prime Minister's decision as a decisive action against prolonged injustice. He welcomed the accompanying commitment of RM1 million in additional funding to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for area maintenance spanning three years.
Though the project's scope may appear limited in scale, its significance to residents who have endured decades of uncertainty cannot be overstated, Ramanan noted. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim formally launched the permanent housing development scheme during a groundbreaking ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on June 15.
The housing dispute had remained unresolved for over 40 years until residents' representatives initiated legal action beginning in 2018. The eventual outcome balanced the residents' need for dignified resettlement with the imperative to preserve Taman Rimba Kiara, avoiding earlier development proposals that had sparked controversy in the area.
